Falling Sick

Yesterday we went out quite early to the Wild Wild Wet. It is a water amusement park located in the eastern side of Singapore. It was quite convenient to reach as it took us only 30 minutes to reach there by bus. The children played happily and refused to come out at about 3pm. After much persuasion, we managed to reach back home after 5pm. I had a cold in the evening, maybe due to the sun and water. I guess it was more due to my body's lack of rest.

When I was there, I tried to run through the figurative code exercises. It was not easy as there were so many distractions. I tried to concentrate but the brain just refused to cooperate.

Lesson 8 discusses about psycho-technical exercises that help the memory process. There are various techniques introduced including few such as relaxation and other attention and thinking training.

At the year 2009 comes to close, I still could not finish lesson 8 on time. I spent most afternoon sleeping to recover from the heavy cold I caught since last night. It felt as if this is the longest lesson in the course.

Lesson 8 Pending Start

Lesson 8 started with many paragraphs of theory. It was refreshing as the previous lessons started quite immediately with exercises with not much theory to read and comprehend. Glancing through the end, I noticed there are 10 exercises and control questions at the end of the lesson.

I could foresee that my learning speed is somewhat slowed down due to the festive season. Another reason is that I also signed for the Weiqi class.

In the evening I had a seminar to attend. And, tomorrow will be another outing day to the Wild Wild Wet with family and friends.

Therefore, lesson 8 will have to wait until hopefully Thursday. :-)

Lesson 7

I started lesson 7 yesterday while the family were having outing. The first exercise involved memorizing the figurative codes using the Chain method. It was quite a breeze to do although using figurative codes with the Chain method is not recommended. We only do this in the exercise.

Exercise 2 involves memorizing a series of consonants in a numbered sequence. Exercise 3 combines memorizing the 2-digit figurative codes with 3-digit figurative codes as an exercise.

Exercise 4 requires forming 20 images for Cicero method to memorize random combinations of letter. I noticed the forming of various images for Cicero method might become useful when we needed a big space for database creation as by the time we reached exercise 10 of this lesson we would have accumulated 100 encoded supported images for the Cicero method.

The next exercise was back to chain method again. I saw a pattern of exercising our memory muscles by going through various memory exercises along the lessons.

The last 4 exercises focused on additional images for the figurative codes.

Lesson 6 - Continued

Last night I managed to memorize all the 50 states of US completely and perfectly. What a good feeling as I have never bothered to do that and always felt that I would not be able to do so.

Continuing with another 10 images of figurative codes and answering the control questions, lesson 6 was also completed last night.

While lesson 7 has to wait for 15 hours to start, I had another family outing today. It was a beautiful Sunday morning with cool air. I loved the feeling as it reminded me when I was young and the air was clean and not that polluted yet.

Lesson 5 - Lesson 6

Finally, I completed lesson 5 today. Working slowly through the last few exercises, I reached the control questions.

During the outing yesterday visiting friend's house for Xmas, I had a chance to read through the GMS Manual, the theoretical part of the course. After knowing more about the theory, I had a better understanding of the memorization process and started to appreciate the various types of exercise done throughout the lessons. Without this knowledge, the exercises seemed a bit odd and strange as I were not aware not of the actual application. I also noticed that the exercises built upon each other.

The first exercise of lesson 6 was a multi-level systems of support images. I had the first taste of this in lesson 5. Lesson 6 solidified the skill even more. Moving on to the next exercise, I just realized that the skill and images in previous exercise were used to memorize the 50 states of USA. As this was applied knowledge, I liked the exercise.

My task tonight would be to complete this exercise so that I could memorize the states with perfect recall.

Lesson 5 - Continued

The remaining exercises of lesson 5 consist of memorizing additional 10 more images of the figurative codes and memorizing words in sequence of ordinal number.

It's a holiday today and I intend to rest for the day.

Lesson 5

After an intensive 4 days of memory exercises, my mind felt a bit saturated with the information. I think the reason could also be attributed to the incoming festive season, Xmas tomorrow and New Year the week after. The mind cannot be asked for cooperation easily now as it is in "holiday" mode now. This brought me to realization why there has to be a limit of one lesson per day to prevent any saturation.

Lesson 5 started with further explanations about creation of associations. Reading through some theory at the beginning of the lesson, I continued with the first exercise. It was a very long one with 75 items to memorize divided into 8 group of images to be attached onto the Cicero support images. It took me almost the whole day to complete just this one exercise alone.

Anyway, tonight is Xmas eve and I would call it a day. We shall continue tomorrow.

Lesson 4

Lesson 4 was started this morning. At a glance there are 10 exercises without control questions. The starting message mentioned again that the volume of exercises will increase gradually.

The first 4 exercises were a repeat of what we learned in lesson 3. The exercises were completed quite easily except for the consonant codifying method as it takes time to create the images with similar sound.

Exercise 5 started to be quite challenging. The task is to produce images from senseless combination of letters using syllables and to memorize them using the Cicero method.

The remaining exercises were building on the figurative codes and expanding the support images for Cicero. This lesson involves many exercises which can be quite tiring to the mind. I also come to a realization that I always feel sleepy when doing memory work. At first I thought I don't sleep enough, but I finally realized that it memory work is hard work. Enough sleep, enough nutrients are strongly suggested to proceed further.

Lesson 3

I have used my remaining time yesterday after the completion of lesson 2 to memorize the figurative codes. It was not difficult, but little did I know that I felt so tired at 9pm that I felt asleep. I just realized that doing memory work took lots of energy from the body. Physically it is not tiring, but the mind works require sufficient energy and nutrients for the mind to work and function properly.

While travelling to the office today, I tried to revise the codes that I memorized last night. I was much easier after overnight process by the mind (sub-conscious) while I was sleeping.

This morning I started on lesson 3. At a glance, I saw there are 10 exercises. The first one was on the Chain method. I noticed this is a common feature to let our brain exercise. Therefore, I have to put away this until later when I have the time to do it in one sitting.

After lunch, I finally completed the first exercise. It seems that Chain method is used quite often in GMS. Anyway, I've got to love the method to continue. Frankly speaking Chain method is the simplest. We can just do it without thinking. Link the image pair together and move on. It is good to use for short-term memory that we need to memorize quickly.

Exercise 2 deals with the symbolization of abstract word. Again we are going to use Chain method here. It takes some time to come up with visual images for the abstracts but the exercise is interesting. Exercise 3 requires linking to familiar information, again using the Chain method. It is another interesting exercise but it requires even more abstraction to link words to similarly pronounced other words. It sounds complicated but you will have different opinion when you try out the exercise.

Exercises 4, 5 and 6 are new and unique. We played with encoding by consonant, creating a word from consonants and creating a word from syllables. I think this is a practice of improving our creativity. We were encouraged to come out with new words from the consonants and syllables. I would say the exercises were quite fun.

Exercise 7 and 8 go back to the figurative codes. As I have sped up myself to memorize more than 50 codes up to this afternoon, I have no problem in completing both exercises. It was just like another drill session to make those codes stick better in my memory.

Exercise 9 used the Cicero images to memorize the sequence of numbers using figurative code. Again, this was a simple exercise for me. Personally I loved the Cicero method so that I completed the exercise in less than 5 minutes. Wow, I could remember 40 digits of random numbers and had perfect recall of them.

The last exercise is basically using the picture card to test our mastery of the figurative codes. After completing the control questions at the end of the lesson, I clicked on Done button. And that started the 15 hours wait for the next lesson to start.

Lesson 2 - Continued

This morning I managed to complete exercise 3 and 4 using the Cicero method and Free Association method. These two methods have become my favorites so far. Maybe because of the structure, it seems to be easier to use especially the Cicero method.

Next comes the lesson on using figurative codes of two digits. I started memorizing the first 10 two-digit numbers and was about ready to do the exercise/test before my next meeting started. The test has to wait. :-)

After the lunch I continued with memorizing the figurative codes and completed exercise 5 easily. I started to fall in love with these figurative codes.

Exercise 6 involved using the Cicero method to memorize random numbers with the help of the newly memorized figurative codes. It was easy but challenging at the same time. The reason is that the first 10 numbers are represented by many animals. That caused my living room to be filled up with all sorts of animals all over the place. Luckily the Cicero method did not cause any confusion.

The next exercise involves creating images for the remaining two-digit figurative codes. The library supplied colorful picture of the images to help the visualization. It is challenging and interesting. The exercise only calls for the printing of the 10 cards. However, I will start memorizing the images with the numbers whenever I have time during the week.

The last exercise is the best as it is only reading an article on how to increase our result by as much as 30%. I completed the reading and managed to go through the review (or they call it control) questions at the end of the lesson.

See you in 13 hours time. In the mean time, I will keep on practicing to memorize the figurative codes.

Lesson 2

After waiting for 13 hours, I am finally allowed to start lesson 2. This is interesting as I was left to wait and to explore the forums to read articles and comments by the people including students.

There are 8 exercises altogether. The first four seems to be similar to those exercised I did in lesson 1. Although the next four exercises are new, but they seem to be related to the figurative codes.

Anyway, I did not get to read the lesson and do the exercise as the family went out to visit the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum at New Bridge Road, followed by Suntec City where we visited the China - Singapore Religious and Cultural Exhibition 2009 and the last day of Bookfest. The good thing is that I managed to read few pages from the GMS manual while I was in the train and the bus during the travel.

Although I came back late and felt quite tired, I still managed to complete the first two exercises on Chain method and Russian Doll method. I wanted to complete the next two on Cicero and Free Association, but my mind could not be asked to compromise anymore. Apparently, the mind has to be fresh to work, to concentrate and to memorize
properly.

The remaining lesson and exercises have to wait until tomorrow as I have to call it a day for now.

Lesson 1

Yesterday after completing the introduction, I immediately started lesson 1. There are five exercises altogether. After reading through some paragraphs on the theory, I managed to complete the first two exercises last night. It was not too easy but it was interesting as I was able to apply the techniques almost immediately and I still remembered what I memorized this morning when I woke up. Exercise 1 was called the "Chain" method and exercise 2 was the "Russian Doll" method. Before I concluded the day, I finished forming the 25 images used in the "Cicero" method, the 3rd exercise.

After completing exercise 3 this morning, I had to go out with my family for Xmas party. I also realized that I have created the Cicero image string with 30 images instead of 25 images. I think it is good as I have an extra 5 images just in case I have longer list.

While outside I took the chance to practice and recall the three memorized lists. The result was 100% for exercise 1 and 2 and 90% for exercise 3. The results were not too bad results although I had expected full score. While outside at the same time, I also finished creating another image list for the "Free Association" method. This is not so straight-forward but it was worth the practice. I chose the topic of stationary and it gave me a very good chance to identify different types of stationary to use in my Free Association image list.

When I tried my image list on exercise 4, I realized that my list is incorrect. Instead of identifying all the things related to the same topic, I need to find matching object for each image. With this revelation, I had to go back to drawing board to redefine my Free Association image list. Finally, with the newly perfected image list I managed to complete exercise 4.

The final exercise 5 is the Alphanumeric Code. It is simpler than other exercises as it only required me to memory the number with alphabets. I completed this exercise quite quickly. After answering few questions at the end of the lesson, I clicked on the "Done" button at the end of lesson 1.

School of Phenomenal Memory

I stumbled across this website called School of Phenomenal Memory few years back when I was researching websites and products related to memory improvement. Reading through the introduction it appeared that the methodology was quite different and the results were quite extraordinary. I did not sign up immediately as the price was a bit hefty and they offered free manual download. I thought I would be able to understand the method by just reading through the manual. After downloaded the manual, printed out and left it in my bookshelf, I conveniently forgot about it. Rediscovered the printouts few times, but I just did not have the time to read as it is a thick manual with more than 160 pages in small fonts.

Finally, today I thought I wanted to revisit the website and signed up for the course just to try out and to improve my memory at the same time.

There are 60 lessons altogether. Reading through lesson one immediately after singing up, I realized it is a no nonsense training. There are texts to read and exercises to do and follow before we can move on to the next lesson.

It is really a different training method that made me restart my brain training although I have always thought I had known all the methods.

Through this blog, I intend to record my progress in following the lessons offered by the School of Phenomenal Memory.
